Statement: Recent polling suggests that 74% of Americans believe our country is headed in the wrong direction. After a year on the campaign trail, listening to Mainers of all backgrounds and beliefs, I am convinced that career politicians have lost sight of the struggles that the average Mainer faces, and that we are more divided than ever.
Food costs continue to explode. Schools are ideological battlegrounds and parents feel unheard. Law enforcement officers are demoralized and there is lawlessness on our once-peaceful streets. The lobster industry, our shared Maine heritage, is under attack. Rent, gas and utilities are increasingly unaffordable for many.
Objectives like attaining 100% renewable energy are crucial to the future, but instead of draconian edicts, we must find mindful and measured approaches that consider the present as well. Change can be achieved without leaving a trail of destruction, or a mountain of debt for our grandchildren.
My 21 years of service on the SEAL Teams provided me with the drive and determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges by working with others to turn longstanding conflicts into workable solutions.
It’s time to head in a new direction, one that leads us toward a brighter future for all Mainers.
