Statement: Throughout my life I have tried to listen to others, really hearing what they had to say, to be fair, understand what challenges people face, act in ways to help them meet those challenges and support the rights of all people in an equal and passionate way. I have been blessed in having incredible role models and many advantages that have helped me in my life and my families’ lives. I feel with that comes great responsibility to find and work towards a truer equity in opportunity, resources and common rights for people and their families regardless of gender, nationality, origin or religious beliefs.
We are lucky. I think that sense of fairness, equality and justice is in all Mainers. Sometimes we do not let each other see it, but I believe it is there. My life has given me many experiences that can help bring that to light and then by working together make progress in common challenges that will create better lives for all in our four towns and our state. This is why I am running to represent every person who lives in Bucksport, Verona Island, Penobscot, and Orland.
What are your thoughts on proposals to do away with Maine’s income taxes?
My general thoughts about taxation both at the federal and state level is that when speaking of or considering changes to specific pieces of our tax structure the whole burden of all taxes must be considered and communicated. In that communication there must be an honest discussion of the real burden across all income levels. Too often I have found politicians and their parties have not given an honest assessment of what proposals like no income tax would mean, especially to those least likely to afford the inevitable changes to other taxes that would require.
When it comes to the state budget, what do you see as top priorities for spending or cuts?
Fully fund education at the 55 percent as promised. Continue to support programs that continue to move us forward to a green energy future. At this point I am not well versed enough in the state budget to answer what spending to cut.
How can Maine best make health care affordable for its citizens?
Support improvements to Obama Care and continue with expanded MaineCare under Obama Care. Work towards lower drug prices.
What policy changes would you support to protect the environment and respond to climate change?
I will support the Climate Council and Climate Action Plan. Have not studied enough to offer policy changes at this time.
Would you vote to support a woman’s right to obtain an abortion?
Yes.
What changes would you like to see in the way police do their jobs in Maine?
No changes to offer at this time.
